I need help with a database

If you are having difficulty accessing a database here are some things that you can try:

1. Check that the Library offers access to the database

Search for the database by using Library Search from the library website. Make sure you search for the database name. Click on the "View It" tab to see our full holdings and any restrictions - the database may be restricted to a specific campus or to a limited number of simultaneous users.

2. Click on the the correct link

If the Library offers access to the database, make sure you access it from Library Search (if you do an internet search Imperial access rights may not be recognised). In most cases this will take you straight to the database you require.

3. Check whether you need a username and password

A few of our databases require a specific username and password. If so, a note in the "Details" tab states "Access requires a specific username and password". The password can be found in our Password list (restricted to Imperial College members).

4. If you are working off-site

If you are trying to access a database from off-site (e.g. at home or from another location), make sure you access it via Library Search and, when prompted, log in with your College username and password.

Alternatively, try one of the following:

  • Look for a UK Federation / Institutional Login link, choose Imperial College London as your institution and log in with your College username and password.
  • Connect to the College Virtual private network (VPN) to allow you to access databases as if you were on-site.
  • Delete cookies in your internet browser. Further information about cookies is available from Directgov and All about cookies.
  • If you are an NHS user, contact your campus library.

If you continue to have problems please contact the Library.

When using databases please abide by the conditions of use.
